setting multiplayer local

Unread post by rivoltata » Wed Feb 19, 2025 8:07 am

Hello!
This is my first time here.
I played Re-volt in 2006.
Now i want to play with my kids in multplayer mode, in local, by our 2 laptops.
I've installed re-volt in both laptops. We use windows 8 and windows 10 home.
But i'm not sure wich is the correct name of Port to set in in the server of my router. I set port number 2310.
When i go in menu multiplayer/host, i can only write the host of my laptop and the response is: connection to host timed out
Can anyone help me please?
Thank you

ok I'll start again with more precise questions;
to play in multiplayer mode with home laptops:

1) Do I have to create my own local network?
2) Do I need to open ports on my router's server?

also regarding the game settings:

First i choose "multiplayer" and i go to the waiting room; and then my son choose multiplayer and "join game" then he has to insert my HOST, correct?

Thank you if anyone is able to help me ;)

That's right.

As the host of the multiplayer session, you can see your IP address in the top right corner when hosting a session (the global IP address as well as the local IP address). Also the port number. You can use the local IP address, if your two computers are connected via the same router / modem / switch.

For internet play, I had to open port 2310 on my router, but maybe it works for you without that, if you just play locally.

I haven't figured it out myself, but sometimes it seems to be necessary to specify the port, sometimes not. So for example, if your host IP address is 192.168.1.20, then try to connect to it with these two options: "192.168.1.20" (simply the IP address only) or "192.168.1.20 2310" (2310 being the standard RVGL port, being seperated by a space)

thanks Sauss-Ente for the confirmation;
unfortunately it doesn't work for me when configuring the two laptops via router-wireless. It doesn't work even if I connect to the router via ethernet cable.
In practice the two laptops see each other but cannot access each other. The sharing settings are also complicated by the fact that one PC has Windows 10 Home and the other has Windows 8.1.
I still have one last attempt left to try: buy a crossed ethernet cable and connect the two PCs to each other.
Sigh

Mixing Wireless + LAN / Win 8 + Win 10 should work. Maybe the Windows Firewall is blocking the way as well.

Did you open a port on your router? It's model dependant, but I had to select TCP and UCP traffic to be passed through on port 2310. And I had to specify the computer, which was going to host the game (so to allow redirect traffic on port 2310 to that particular host machine).
