Nvidia's Racer RTX inspired by Re-Volt

Unread post by numanoid » Tue Feb 21, 2023 10:27 pm

I'm kind of surprised I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, I just stumbled upon it myself while looking for information about the new Nvidia graphics cards -> https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2022/09/2 ... -rtx-demo/
That something is a fully simulated, real-time playable environment — inspired by the team’s shared favorite childhood game, Re-Volt. In Racer RTX, radio-controlled cars zoom through Los Angeles streets, a desert and a chic loft bedroom.
Of course it looks amazing, I just wonder how enjoyable the physics are going to be for gameplay and if they're going full realism or a more arcadey handling à la "RC Racers".

I'm also hoping for a full standalone release, but the mentioning of "NVIDIA Omniverse" worries me a bit.

Interestingly there's barely any news since that initial reveal, that announced November 2022 release never happened and apparently its now planned to come out some time this year -> https://old.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comment ... _date_any/

Yes, I was also waiting for this release. I hope we can try it soon.

From the looks, it looks a bit more like RC Cars, or a hybrid between RC Cars and ReVolt. Not necessarily bad, but it's not the first moderrn RC racer, other fell into relative obscurity or arent actively developed. I wouldnt be surprised if the project was scrapped.

That's quite cool! Nice to see Re-Volt mentioned in the context of technological advancement. However, I'm honestly sceptical about this being a simulation. Some things, like the frame falling off the wall at the end, seem too good to be true.

I mean they did put it as the introductory showcase for the launch of their new graphics card series, so it would be kind of embarrassing if they didn't follow through with their announcement of it. But who knows, the lack of updates certainly doesn't do them any favours.

In terms of visual fidelity I think its legit, if I understand it correctly they will even limit it to run only on at least RTX capable cards, so all that processing power has to go somewhere. Though looking at it again I noticed some scenes were looking rather washed out, maybe thats just the quick cuts of the video but I hope it looks more vibrant in the final version.

Physics-wise, all of what is shown in the video should also be possible nowadays in games, but its probably artificial (as in hand crafted) for showcase purposes (some of those car jumps also look weird/impossible).

I think Re-Volt managed to strike a very good balance between realism and fun gameplay, but I guess we'll see whether "full realism" takes any of that fun away.

edit: Here's a week-old reddit thread about it -> https://old.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comment ... racer_rtx/
We are working on it
I guess thats at least better than complete silence :D

Isn't that pretty normal, though? I feel like many video game projects that were developed foremost to show off a new system's capabilities have got cancelled.
