Open Long Races
Open Long Races
===============
An easy hour of colourful endurance racing on a couple of circuit-like tracks, hosted by Sauss. Basically, me and RX1 were having challenging race duels off the record for quite a while and would like to invite you to these. They're a mental challenge, lasting over lots of laps, but in fact quite beginner-friendly through the choice of simpler tracks and the more repetitive nature of an endurance race. Pickups will be absent at most of the races as well, so it allows for some cleaner racing.
Joining
=======
Races will be held regularly at 16:00 UTC time on Sunday. There is no fixed host address, so instead, the server's IP adress will be announced down there at the respective race announcement post on the board a couple of minutes before the race should take place. The IRC channel #rvgl at libera.chat is also open for questions.
General Race Schedule
=====================
There will be a small number of races, leading up to a final, a long race of around 20 minutes.
In general, the race scedule will look like this:
1st race: Warmup race with pickups (ca. 2 minutes).
2nd race: Long race without pickups (ca. 10 minutes).
3rd race: Long race with pickups (ca. 10 minutes).
4th race: Final race without pickups. (ca. 20 minutes).
There is room for experiments.
Should there be a championship, points would be given like this:
Warm-up races: 3-2-1
Races of around 10 minutes: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1
Races of around 20 miuntes: 15-12-10-8-7-6-4-3-2-1
Fastest lap classification *: 5-4-3-2-1
* only to be used on longer races without pickups
Car Selection
=============
These races are open to all cars, that are made in the spirit of competition. Basically pick whatever you like, except cars that exceed the Super-Pro class from current online I/O races. Slower cars are eligible as well, as races will be held as a multi-class event. Classification is done a bit differently than in other online races. If the leader crosses the start-finish-line after the scheduled distance, all cars following are flagged off at the line. So the lapped cars don't have to complete the whole course.
Track Selection
===============
There will be an emphasis on cleaner tracks that allow for some pure racing without items. That means some rather different tracks will appear in the races compared to what's played in most online sessions. Links to Revolt World (www.revoltworld.net) will be provided in the announcement. Please download them in time.
The following tracks are in contention to be used for the races.

Racing Etiquette
================
Please don't deliberately push off or shoot at cars, that are in different laps than your own. Through having cars of different speeds on the track and the races being quite long, some friction will be unavoidable. But every driver should do everything possible to let a faster car that's in a different lap go by. Like listening, if an engine noise is approaching from behind. And checking, how far the next opponents are away (down at the radar).
Whether "Simulation Mode" can be used reliably in online-races with a certain amount of lag, has to be tested.
Anyways, let's see, if this works.

Re: Open Long Races
Hello everyone,
this is my first post here on the Board, so here is a brief intro.: I'm playing RVGL online more or less frequently since Dec. last year and I'm really glad that this game runs such well on Linux and on old hardware. Re-Volt used to be one of my favorite games, back in the days when the original game was still new. I still remember how much fun we had with the PC demo version (from 1999) . Later I enjoyed creating and playing my own Lego tracks a lot. Thanks to Re-Volt / RVGL community I can revive these times and it's cool that the games performs and looks even better now. I also really like the extra content and the improvements to the game play balancing. I sometimes enjoy racing the tracks alone, just tying to find good lines and drive well, but when I play with others, having fun together is the most important thing.
The "Open Long Races" should be interesting for everyone who enjoys longer races and playing some of the less established tracks. I also think it's cool to have some variation in a session (race length and pickup-wise). Suggestions of tracks to play are welcome (I will post mine here soon).

Re: Open Long Races
These races will continue to be run every second week on Sunday at 16:00 UTC. Further announcements will follow.
Now how to upload the result files to the RVGL session parser (https://online.re-volt.io/sessions/results.php)? What kind of password is required there? Where to register?

Here my track suggestions.
These are tracks that are (currently) not played in IO online events, but might be worth racing. Most are part of the IO bonus pack. I tried to sort them by difficulty.

Re: Open Long Races
The Open Long Races have come to an end. I admit defeat to a multi-million-dollar company, controlling the communication between players these days. If this privacy tradeoff is a necessity for gaming, I'm out of here and will organise the races privately without the hassle to put together a race scedule.
Hopefully, lots of experimentation will be done with different race formats in online races.
