Oil issue – time between dropping and having effect has increased

Unread post by ZipperZbieracz » Sat Feb 19, 2022 11:05 pm

There were (at least) two measurable changes in how fast a dropped oil would have it's effect on cars behind or the car dropping the oil when driving backwards. In other words, there were 2 changes – 2 increases in the delay between the moment of drop (pickup use) and it's effect of making wheels sliding. It has "effect" later in the newest RVGL versions than in the earlier RVGL versions, and the early RVGL versions have the effect later than in 1.2.

The small test I conducted – driving backwards with Toyeca and dropping oil at different speeds and checking if the wheels fall into the oil or not. Values are approximate:

~31kph current RVGL – from this speed upwards Toyeca doesn't get oiled in reverse, below it does
~40kph in 2016 RVGL – from this speed upwards Toyeca doesn't get oiled in reverse, below it does
~47kph 1.2 13.0820a – Toyeca still does get oiled in reverse, from ~48/49 Toyeca doesn't get oiled in reverse

So there was a difference from 1.2 to RVGL, and then from RVGL to current RVGL. The recent change in the new RVGL version was big enough so that even Humma at maximum speed doesnt get oiled when dropping oil in reverse, while previously in both 1.2 and "early" RVGL versions driving backwards at maximum speed would make Humma fall into it's own oil. The change in recent RVGL versions is so big that it's very easy to avoid getting oiled by the car in front, if you are driving just behind the car in front – your wheels will not fall into the oil that a player 1m ahead dropped on you.

I do not know exactly which version introduced the most recent change to the oil, it would require more testing, preferably on Humma as after the "second change", in the current RVGL version it's possible to drive backwards at maximum speed in reverse and do not get oiled by own oil, while in both old RVGL and 1.2 Humma would get oiled by it's own oil when driving at maximum speed backwards.

Have you checked whether the difference in speed is dependent on the frame rate?

I tested it a bit more and indeed the FPS (60 vs high) on 1.2 and RVGL versions makes a difference in how fast oil takes effect, so it explains some of the difference (lower fps » oil takes effect faster, at lower speeds), like the difference between 40kph and 48kph when driving backwards with Toyeca.

But in RVGL since the rvgl_21.0905a-1 version (the low-CoM "fix" version) there was indeed a change in how oil behaves, since this version Humma doesn't get oiled at max speed backwards (both 60 and high FPS), before this version Humma would always get oiled driving backwards all the time (both high and low FPS), and treshold for when Toyeca gets oiled in reverse is the smallest one regardless of the FPS since this version (around ~31kph backwards). Before this version it seems to me FPS was changing the speed treshold when Toyeca was getting oiled when in reverse, since this version it seems FPS has no role in that and the treshold is the smallest one (slowest speed, biggest oil delay between use and effect) for Toyeca, or the effect of FPS is very small and inconsistent, like 1-3 kph.

So:

before rvgl_21.0905a-1 – FPS had effect on how fast oil would take effect on the wheels, higher fps → bigger delay, in both RVGL and 1.2
after rvgl_21.0905a-1 – Humma never gets oiled regardless of FPS when driving in reverse (before it always did), Toyeca on high FPS doesn't get oiled when driving backwards above ~31kph, FPS makes either no difference, or the difference is 1-2kph and even then it's not very consistent.
